Structural Steel vs Mild Steel

Difference between Structural steel and mild steel by Vishal Industries

Structural Steel and Mild Steel are the two most common types of Steel. Both of them are widely used in the construction industry. They might look the same but still have major key differences. There are a lot of things that you should know about Structural Steel and Mild Steel. In this blog, we will discuss the major differences between Structural Steel and Mild Steel.

Definition

Structural Steel –

Structural Steel is a type of steel in which high carbon content is present. This steel has higher tensile strength and durability.

Mild Steel –

Mild Steel is a type of steel which has low carbon content. This steel has less tensile strength as compared to structural steel.

Carbon Composition

Structural Steel –

It has high carbon content ranging from 0.15% to 0.30%. It also contains other alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, and chromium.  This high carbon makes it harder and stronger.

Mild Steel –

It has a carbon content ranging from 0.05% to 0.25%. Sometimes manganese, silicon, sulphur, and phosphorus are also added to enhance the properties of Mild Steel.

Properties

Structural Steel –

Structural Steel has high carbon content. Due to this, it has more hardness and tensile strength. It is less ductile as compared to mild steel. It is difficult to weld Structural Steel.

Mild Steel –

Mild Steel has very low carbon content. It has less tensile strength when compared to Structural Steel. It is soft and is easy to work with Mild Steel. It is easy to weld Mild Steel because of its low carbon content.

Cost

Structural Steel –

Structural steel is expensive because of the high carbon present in it. Due to high carbon, it has more strength as compared to Mild Steel. Its high tensile strength, carbon content, and hardness make it more expensive.

Mild Steel –

Mild Steel is affordable when compared to other steels. Its low carbon content, high ductility, and easy availability make it budget budget-friendly option. Because of its affordability and wide range of applications, it is more popular when compared with other steel.

Strength

Structural Steel –

Structural steel is super strong and is used in big projects

Mild steel –

Mild Steel is more flexible and used in small projects like fences, fasteners, etc

Applications

Structural Steel –

Structural Steel is used in the frames of many modern buildings, from skyscrapers to homes, reinforcement structures, roofing beams, bridges, telecommunication towers, wind turbines, warehouse constructions, stadiums, and many more large projects.

Mild Steel –

Mild Steel is used in the manufacturing of fasteners, screws (drywall screws, chipboard screws, self-drilling screws, etc.), nails, spokes, rivets, chain links, fences, automobile manufacturing, building constructions, washers, nut bolts, shoe tacks, and many more.

In conclusion, if you need something tough and long-lasting go for structural steel but if you need something easy to shape, weld, and budget-friendly, Mild Steel is the best choice.
